ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1869a: 15 (key), 16 (description).

TYPE LOCALITY: “ ad littora Adriatici … in Etruria [Adriatic beaches … Etruria (= Tuscany) ( Italy)]”.

TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♂, lectotype (missing right hind-leg) ( MZUF: Box 30): Tetanops Fall. / contarinii Rndn., Venet. [= Veneto] / 1594 / lectotype Tetanops Fall. contarinii Rndn. , ♂, desig. Á. Soós, 1978.

PARALECTOTYPES EXAMINED: 1 ♂ (covered with mold) ( MZUF: Box 30): Tetanops Fall. / contarinii Rndn., Venet. [= Veneto] / 1594 / paralectotype Tetanops Fall. contarinii Rndn. , ♂, desig. Á. Soós, 1978; 2 ♀♀ (one missing right hind-leg) ( MZUF: Box 30): Tetanops Fall. / contarinii Rndn., Etrur. [= Etruria (Tuscany) ] / 1594 / paralectotype ♀ Tetanops Fall. contarinii Rndn. , ♂, desig. Á. Soós, 1978.

CURRENT STATUS: valid species ( Soós 1984c: 49, Belcari et al. 1995b: 6).

REMARKS: Rondani (1869a: 16) described Tetanops contarinii without specifying the number , the sex or the length of the specimens: “ unicum exemplar olim accepi hujus a Nob. Nicolao Contarini ad littora Adriatici lectum , et post a cl. Haliday … specimina aliqua inventa fuerunt [Formerly I received a single specimen from Mr. Nicolao Contarini collected on the beaches of the Adriatic, and later some specimens collected by Mr. Haliday …]”. Soós (1983: 254) designated a lectotype (♂) and paralectotypes (1 ♂, 2 ♀♀).

REMARKS: name that Rondani (1869a: 26) proposed as a synonym of Herina bifasciata (Loew, 1858) and was not made available by use as a valid species before 1961. O’Hara et al. (2011: 210) considered the name as unavailable.

[ Herina subapicalis ] Morge, 1959b: 90.

REMARKS: nomen nudum; Morge (1959b: 90) cited an unpublished Rondani name.
