Diagnosis. Stomopogon paranaensis sp. nov. is the only species that has all legs black apart from S. hirtitibia , from which it differs by having scutum with three brown vittae, and from S. nigrisquama , from which it differs by having halter knob yellow.

Etymology. The specific epithet paranaensis , a noun in apposition, refers to Paraná, state of the locality-type.

Description

Holotype male. Length: Body: 2.2 mm. Wing: 2.5 mm.

Head (25B). Frontal vitta, fronto-orbital plate, face, parafacial and gena dense silvery pruinose. Frontal triangle light brown, extending to the middle of frons. Eye with small and sparse white cilia, distance between eyes 0.31 of maximum head-width. Antenna black, inserted above middle of eyes; arista short pubescent with apical third bare. 4 frontal setae, the second one shorter than others; 1 proclinate orbital seta; 1 upper orbital seta; ocellar seta well developed; postocellar seta divergent with same ocellar seta length; inner vertical seta parallel subequal in length to ocellar seta. Proboscis shiny dark brown. Palpus brown and filiform.

Thorax (25C). Grey, light brown pruinose. Acrostichal setae 2+4; intra-alar setae 1+2, the anterior postsutural pair longer than posterior; 5 anepisternal setae.

Legs (25E). Dark brown, with some white setae on fore and mid coxae. Claws and pulvilli developed, pulvilli light brown. Fore femur with many setae on d, pd and pv. Fore tibia with many cilia; preapical seta on d, p and pv. Mid femur with av and pv with a series of long and fine setae; 1 p preapical seta. Mid tibia with many short setae on all surfaces, preapical setae on a, av, d, p, pd and v. Hind femur with many cilia on all surfaces, setae on p shorter than a. Hind tibia with many cilia on all surfaces, d with longer setae than other; 1 av preapical seta.

Abdomen (25C). Greyish, light brown pruinose, dark brown spots on all tergites. Sternite 5 U-shaped, covered with long setae on apical half ( Fig. 4G View FIGURE 4 ).

Terminalia ( Fig. 4 View FIGURE 4 H–I). Cercus longer than wide, apically shallow bifurcate; covered with many long setae; hypandrium long tubular; phallapodeme more or less the same diameter in all extension and bigger than hypandrium; pregonite longer than postgonite; postgonite with 2 setulae ( Fig. 2B View FIGURE 2 ).

Female (26A–E). Length (n=63): Body: 3.0-3.5 mm; Wing: 2.6-3.4 mm. Similar to male, except for hind tibia with only 3 ad and 3 pd setae, 2 of them supramedian and one submedian; tibiae covered by shorter cilia; abdominal spots light brown. The female hind tibia coloration ranges from light brown to dark brown.
