"Habitat in America septentrionali." RCN: 7465.

Lectotype (Rouleau in Rhodora 48: 105. 1946): Herb. Linn. No. 1185.6 ( LINN) .

Current name: Populus balsamifera L. ( Salicaceae ).

Note: Although some earlier authors (e.g. Farwell in Rhodora 21: 101. 1919) rejected this as a nomen ambiguum, Rouleau (l.c. 48: 103-110. 1946) studied the case in some detail and concluded that the name should continue to be used for the Northern Balsam Poplar.
