Ogdoecosta biannularis ( Boheman 1854) View in CoL

( Figs 4 View FIGURE 4 A–C)

Chelymorpha biannularis Boheman 1854:66

Male. Length 9–11 mm, width 6–7 mm (n=15). Glabrous, black.

HEAD. Surface black, with punctures; frons with scattered setae, canaliculate between eyes. Genal surface with fine punctures, short setae. Interocular width 2 times diameter of eyes. Antennae short, not exceeding the base of pronotum; antennomere III longer than IV; antennomere I longer than XI. Clypeus sub-trapezoidal to semicircular in shape, over 2 times wider than long; surface with scattered large punctures and pubescence long in lateral view. Labrum 2–3 times wider than long; surface smooth.

THORAX. Pronotum 2 times wider than long, surface glabrous, variable in color; anterior margin emarginated, margination U-shaped; base sinuous; hind angles sharp and produced behind with coarse punctures; explanate margin coarsely punctate; pronotal disc with a distinct longitudinal groove. Prosternum completely smooth, glabrous, fine punctures close to lateral margin of pronotum. Scutellum triangular, surface smooth, impunctate, black. Elytra surface glabrous, black, with variable pattern and number of spots (four and eight spots); punctures irregular, moderately coarse. Prosternal process glabrous, moderately grooved, apex rounded. Mesosternal process notched.

ABDOMEN. Ventrites surface smooth and glabrous, black in most specimens, brown in the rest. Aedeagus length no more than 1.5 mm, apex rounded ( Fig. 19 View FIGURE 19 A).

Female. Similar to male. Length 12.2–13.7 mm, width 7.7–8.3 mm (n=15). Interocular width 2 times diameter of eyes. Labrum 2–3 times wider than long. Clypeus over 2 times wider than long. Pronotum 2 times wider than long. Spermatheca well sclerotized, over 2 times wider than long; apex rounded ( Fig. 19 View FIGURE 19 A), with velum; spermathecal duct very coiled.

Comparative note. This species is distinguished from O. fasciata by its coarse punctures in the explanate margin of the pronotum, and the velum is not extended at the apex of spermatheca.

Remarks. The color pattern in adults and the spermathecal shape in this species are very variable. The apical appendix in the spermatheca may be near to the receptacle, but more often it is more separated. The spermathecal duct is always very coiled; in some specimens, the velum is weakly sclerotized ( Fig. 19 View FIGURE 19 A).

Host plant. Ipomoea murucoides Roem. & Schult. (Convolvulaceae) ( Romero-Napoles 1990).

Known distribution. México: Durango, Sinaloa, Estado de México, Michoacán, Puebla, Morelos, Veracruz, Guerrero, and Oaxaca ( Borowiec & Świętojańska 2016).

Type material examined. Lectotype (des. L. Borowiec) ( NHRS) ( Figs 4 View FIGURE 4 A–C). México, No locality.
