Leucotabanus albovarius ( Walker, 1854)

Diagnosis. Size 14.0– 17.8mm. Frontal Index 7–8.3. Species characterized by large white, usually triangular, spots on tergites 2 and 4 and smaller spots on tergites 1, 3, 5 and 6. Some specimens also have a white posterior band on tergites 2 and 4 to varying degrees, most have the side of these segments with some white hairs. Wing hyaline with slender yellow pterostigma. Legs brown, not markedly bicolored. Abdomen sharply pointed.

Comments. L. albovarius , an Amazonian species, inhabits the lower stratum of primary forest and along waterways. It is more frequently encountered in the late afternoon and persistently attacks horses and cattle. The male, larvae and pupa were described by Godoi & Rafael (2007), although there is an illustration error in the antenna as figured (page 103, Fig. 2 ). The style is portrayed to have five segments, but there are only four segments.

Distribution. Eastern Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia; Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana and Brazil (Amazon).
