Notes:— When Trinius (1832: 331) described Imperata brasiliensis , he did not indicate any specimens in the protologue, but only wrote “V. spp. Brasil.”. According to Taxonomic Literature II, the C. B. Trinius’ grass herbarium is stored at LE ( Stafleu & Cowan 1986: 493). Filgueiras (2003) and TROPICOS (2023) stated that specimens collected by L. Riedel in Brazil and deposited in LE, K, and US herbaria are type specimens of I. brasiliensis . We found at LE herbarium the specimen Riedel 1016 (barcode LE 00000639) collected in November 1823 in Serra da Lapa, Minas Gerais, Brazil. This specimen was verified by C. B. Trinius and is part of the original material used to describe I. brasiliensis ( JSTOR 2023) . A duplicate of this collection is deposited in K herbarium (barcode K000632954). Fragments deposited in US (barcode US 01050244 / catalog number US- 2942426) and ISC (barcode ISC-v-0000547) are indicated as type fragments originally from the Trinius’ herbarium and may also correspond to duplicates of this gathering. However, the Riedel name and the collector number “1016” are not indicated on the herbarium labels of these two last sheets. Another specimen collected in Brazil and deposited in W herbarium (sheet W0028479, ex LE) has the collector indicated as “Riedel”, but there is no collector number, so we are also not sure whether this is a duplicate of the same gathering. Considering that at least two duplicates of the original material have been confirmed for Imperata brasiliensis , we designate here the specimen Riedel 1016 (LE – barcode LE 00000639) as the lectotype of this name ( Fig. 1 View FIGURE 1 ).

Ruprecht (1842) described Imperata brasiliensis var. mexicana and cited the collection Galeotti 5678 in the protologue, without indicating the herbarium where it was deposited. As specimens of the gathering Galeotti 5678 were found at BR, K, P, US, and W herbaria, all these specimens are considered syntypes according to Art. 9.6 of the ICN ( Turland et al. 2018). We designate here the specimen deposited in BR (barcode BR 0000006862817) as the lectotype of Imperata brasiliensis var. mexicana ( Fig. 2 View FIGURE 2 ).

Imperata arundinacea var. americana was described by Andersson (1855) with three collections cited in the protologue ( Guyana: Schomburgk 665; Mexico: Galeotti 5678; Chile: d’Urville s.n.), but with no indication of a holotype or the herbaria where specimens were deposited. Therefore, all specimens of these gatherings are syntypes ( Turland et al. 2018, Art. 9.6). Filgueiras (2003) and TROPICOS (2023) stated that the Schomburgk collection (erroneously cited with the collector number “655”) is deposited in the BM and US herbaria. In fact, we found specimens stored in BM ( BM 014605246) and US (barcode US 00134027 / catalog number US- 702824). In addition, three more specimens of the same gathering were found at W herbarium (sheets W0028483, W1889-0253489, and W1904-0013402). The specimens of the gathering Galeotti 5678 were found at BR (barcode BR 0000006862817), K (barcode K000632955), P (barcode P02016960), US (barcode US 00487541 / catalog number US- 0090672), and W (sheet W0028482).As the collection Galeotti 5678 was cited by Ruprecht (1842) in the protologue of I. brasiliensis var. mexicana , I. arundinacea var. americana is a superfluous name ( Turland et al. 2018, Art. 52.1). Filgueiras (2003) and TROPICOS (2023) also cited the collection d’Urville s.n. as an original material of I. arundinacea var. americana , but without mentioning the herbaria where the specimen is deposited. We searched for additional information and digital images of this last syntype, but found no further records of this collection. Therefore, as there are several syntypes of Imperata arundinacea var. americana , we designate here the specimen of the gathering Schomburgk 665 deposited in US (barcode US 00134027 / catalog number US- 702824) as the lectotype of this name ( Fig. 3 View FIGURE 3 ). Both I. arundinacea var. americana and I. brasiliensis var. mexicana are currently considered synonyms of I. brasiliensis (e.g., Gabel 1982, Filgueiras 2003, TROPICOS 2023).
