Material examined. JAPAN • 1♀, “ Hemicypris megalops 010725 ”, valves and appendages mounted on a glass slide in an unknown matrix; [Okayama]; Ichiro Okubo leg.; LBM 1430009515 View Materials .

Remarks. The specimen of Hemicypris kibiensis examined was provided by Ichiro Okubo. The slide is labeled as Hemicypris megalops , but because Okubo (2004) considered Hemicypris megalops a senior synonym of Hemicypris kibiensis we assume that this specimen represents Hemicypris kibiensis of Okubo (1990). Overall, in carapace shape and size, this specimen resembles Hemicypris megalops ( Fig. 4C, M & N View FIGURE 4 ). However, the h2 seta on the seventh limb is not reflexed and distally this limb is not compact and rounded. Additionally, in transmitted light microscopy, the valves have a reticulated pattern (ca. 14–25 µm across) overlying a finer, poorly defined granular background ( Fig. 4O View FIGURE 4 ). Such a reticulated pattern has not been recorded for Hemicypris megalops . We therefore can- not confirm the proposed synonymy by Okubo (2004) that Hemicypris kibiensis is a junior synonym of Hemicypris megalops , and refer to this specimen as Hemicypris kibiensis . A lack of specimens hinders further work on this species.
