Diagnosis. Easily differentiated from its only congener, G. anomala , by its bright orange to reddish scutellum ( Figs. 5–8 View FIGURES 5–8 ) and the lack of any globose swelling on the pronotum.

Redescription. Colour. Head and thorax iridescent metallic blue-green, occasionally with purple lustre; base of scape pale yellow, distal third to fourth and remaining segments of antenna dark brown, with more or less strong metallic blue-green iridescence on distal annulus of scape and on basipedicellite; labium yellow, labiomeres III–IV gradually darkened towards apex; cicatrices, a pair of narrowly separated, longitudinally elongate, quadrangular submedian spots and a pair of large oval sublateral spots on posterior lobe of pronotum, and a pair of small rounded spots posteriorly on humeri black; scutellum bright orange to reddish, with two pairs of spots arranged transversely anteriad to middle and a pair of transversely elongate spots posteriad of middle (latter pair might be faint or lacking); all supracoxal lobes, explanate proepisternum, pro-, meso- and metepimeroids, peritreme with meso- and metathoracic potions of evaporatorium, and thoracic sternum bright yellow; coxae, trochanters, and most of femora bright yellow, a broad apical annulus on each femora continued into a longitudinal band on posterior surface approaching base of femur, as well as all tibiae and tarsi black with metallic blue-green or occasionally purple lustre; abdominal venter (including terminalia of both sexes) bright yellow, with a pair of sublateral series of black patches mesad of spiracles on ventrites III–VI.

Body about 1.9–2.0 times as long as humeral width. Body surface and vestiture: anterior collar of pronotum and widened median portion of transverse furrow separating callar and posterior lobes of pronotum with distinct punctures, remaining parts of pronotum virtually unpunctured; anterior half of scutellum (except basal tumescence) finely punctate, punctures becoming indistinct posteriorly, posterior portion of scutellum virtually lacking noticeable punctures; margins of abdominal venter laterad of spiracles with fine, unpigmented punctures, disc without punctures. Head about 1.25 times as wide as its median length, 1.6–1.65 (♂, ♀) times as wide as interocular distance, length of anteocular part 1.5–1.55 times as long as length of one eye, rather broadly rounded anteriorly. Antenna: distipedicellite 1.05–1.35 times as long as basipedicellite. Labium: apex slightly surpassing middle of abdominal ventrite III. Pronotum 1.9–2.0 times as wide across humeral angles as its median length, without pecularities. Scutellum about 1.35 times as long as its greatest width, outline ovoid, lateral margin gradually arched, apical margin weakly emarginate (♂, ♀).

External male genitalia ( Figs. 15–20 View FIGURES 15–28 , 29–30 View FIGURES 29–33 , 34–36 View FIGURES 34–41 ). Genital capsule ( Figs. 15–18 View FIGURES 15–28 ): ventral rim deeply sinuate posteriorly but with a small, short protrusion medially ( Figs. 16–17 View FIGURES 15–28 ); posterior end of cuplike sclerite thickened, rigid and laminate. Paramere ( Figs. 19–20 View FIGURES 15–28 ) with thick hairs on its lateral edge and without tubercles at base of crown. Phallus ( Figs. 29–30 View FIGURES 29–33 , 34–35 View FIGURES 34–41 ): phallotheca with a pair of long, rod-like thecal processes set on a very short common base; cp-II1 ( Figs. 29–30 View FIGURES 29–33 , 34 View FIGURES 34–41 : cp-II1) fully sclerotized with two rows of sharp denticles marginally, cp-II2 ( Figs. 30 View FIGURES 29–33 , 34 View FIGURES 34–41 : cp-II2) membranous, elongate, tubular, cp-II3 ( Figs. 29–30 View FIGURES 29–33 , 34–35 View FIGURES 34–41 : cp-II3) greatly membranous, apically sclerotized with a denticulate margin, cp-III ( Fig. 34 View FIGURES 34–41 : cp-III) heavily sclerotized, curved ventrad, claw-like. Aedeagal complex ( Fig. 36 View FIGURES 34–41 ) with an oval endophallic reservoir ( Fig. 36 View FIGURES 34–41 : res) of moderate size, subequal in size with swollen part of dorsoapical lumen, partly attached to base of aedeagus; aedeagus with a highly elevated, greatly enlarged dorsal lump.

External female genitalia ( Figs. 37 View FIGURES 34–41 , 42–45). Terminalia as in Fig. 37 View FIGURES 34–41 ; exposed portion of valvifers VIII nearly coplanar, without carina-like elevations, posterior margin almost straight; valvulae VIII sclerotized and pigmented except its membranous distal portion, apical lobe large, elongate, weakly sclerotized; valvulae IX fully membranous, apical lobe elongate. Gynatrium: areas surrounded by ring sclerites slightly sclerotized; fecundation sclerite elongate, band-like, elevated into a high carina (Fig. 44), proximal portion narrowly surround orifice of spermathecal duct. Spermatheca: intermediate part with distinct septum; elongate proximal portion of apical receptacle bent in a single plane (Fig. 45).

Measurements (in mm; N = 5). Body length 14.2–16.3; length of head 2.90–3.10, width across eyes 3.60–3.90, interocular distance 2.19–2.55; lengths of scape 1.13–1.25: basipedicellite 1.25–1.30: distipedicellite 1.35–1.68: basiflagellum 2.38–2.43: distiflagellum 2.80–3.05; median length of pronotum 3.75–4.22, humeral width 7.15– 8.54; length of scutellum 9.70–10.6, greatest width 7.30–8.00.

Intraspecific variability. The posteriormost pair of patches on the scutellum might be well developed, broad, frequently reduced to a pair of narrow transverse bands, occasionally only present as faint dark suffusion, sometimes completely lacking. The sublateral pair of spots anteriad to the middle of scutellum might also be reduced or completely lacking. The sublateral spots on the abdominal venter are sometimes reduced.

Preimaginal stages, habitat, bionomics. Unknown.

Remarks. Scutellera reynaudii was described based on an unspecified number of individuals (Guérin- Méneville 1834). No syntypes could be found in MNHN where most of the types of species described by F.É. Guérin-Méneville are deposited. The good original description and particularly the accompanying accurate habitus illustration (Guérin-Méneville 1834: Atlas: Insectes, plate 4, fig. 3), however, allow a doubtless identification of this distinctive species. Callidea pulchra was also described based on an unspecified number of individuals ( Westwood 1837). A single female syntype ( Figs. 1–4 View FIGURES 1–4 ) was located in OXUM; it is hereby selected as lectotype of this species. The synonymy of the two species proposed by Stål (1873) and Distant (1900) is hereby confirmed.

Distribution. G. reynaudii is restricted to the Sundaic Region; specimens were seen from the Malay Peninsula, Borneo, Sumatra and Java. Its distribution is summarized as follows:
