Type material. HOLOTYPE, female, 3.0 mm, AM P.46670, north-east of Twofold Bay , New South Wales, Australia, 36°57.95'S 150°22.0'E to 36°57.41'S 150°22.14'E, 960–1050 m, thick grey mud with lumps of hard clay, dredged, 12 December 1986, W. Ponder, P. Hutchings & R. Springthorpe, RV Franklin, stn FR1086-07. PARA- TYPES: 1 male, 2.0 mm, AM P.46671; 10 males and females, AM P.46672, same data as Holotype; 3 specimens, AM P.46673, north-east of Twofold Bay, New South Wales, Australia, 36°56.2'S 150°23.00'E to 36°57.00'S 150°22.5'E, 1600 m, dredged, 12 December 1986, W. Ponder, P. Hutchings & R. Springthorpe, RV Franklin, stn FR1086-08.

Additional material examined. 1 specimen, AM P.33632, off Sydney , New South Wales, Australia, 33°38'S 152°03'E, 914 m, dredged, 10 December 1980, R. Springthorpe & P. Colman, FRV Kapala, stn K80-20-08 .

Type locality. North-east of Twofold Bay , New South Wales, Australia, 36°57.95'S 150°22.0'E to 36°57.41'S 150°22.14'E, 960–1050 m depth.

Etymology. The specific name refers to the RV Franklin which has made many fine collections of lysianassoid amphipods from deep water along the east coast of Australia.

Diagnostic description. Head lateral cephalic lobe large, narrowly rounded; ventral margin curved. Antenna 1 peduncular article 1 without posterodistal spine; accessory flagellum 2-articulate, article 1 short; flagellum without callynophore in female, with strong 2-field callynophore in male. Mandible lacinia mobilis a simple robust seta; lamina dentata absent; accessory setal row present, not on raised setose ridge; molar absent; palp attached slightly distally; palp article 2 broad, as long as article 3; article 3 with subparallel margins. Maxilla 1 outer plate with 10 setal-teeth in 4/6 arrangement, outer row setal-teeth with medial cusps; palp well developed, 1-articulate, with apical slender setae. Maxilliped inner plate small; outer plate large; palp 4-articulate, article 4 large. Gnathopod 1 chelate; ischium smaller than propodus, not swollen posteroproximally; carpus extremely compressed; propodus length about 1.9 × breadth, posterior margin well developed, produced corner of palm not attenuated, corner of palm without robust seta; dactylus reaching to corner of palm. Gnathopod 2 palm minute, transverse. Pereonite 4 without dorsal spines. Pereonite 5 without dorsal spines. Pereopod 5 merus without posteroproximal shoulder. Pereopod 6 basis with posteroventral lobe weakly produced; merus longer than broad, without posteroproximal shoulder. Pereopod 7 basis subrectangular with posterior margin weakly dentate. Oostegites from gnathopod 2 to pereopod 5. Epimeron 3 posterior margin without projections, posteroventral corner broadly rounded. Uropod 3 biramous, inner ramus extending beyond article 1 of outer ramus. Telson shorter than broad, entire.

Remarks. Figorella franklini , F. tanidea and F. tasmanica are unusual in having more than four setal-teeth in the inner row of maxilla 1 outer plate. This occurs on both the left and right maxillae. See also Remarks under F. angulosa .

Distribution. South-eastern Australia, Tasman Sea; 914–1600 m depth.
