Scandent herbs or shrubs up to 2 m tall. Stem glabrous. Petiole 1‒3(‒4) cm long, glabrous to glabrescent; blade elliptic to ovate, 6‒15 × 3.5‒7.0 cm, glabrous above and beneath, base attenuate, occasionally asymmetric, apex acute to acuminate, margin subentire or slightly crenate, with 1 or 2 marginal hydathodes per cm, secondary veins 9 to 12 per side, conspicuous, intramarginal vein present, discontinuous. Peduncle 5‒9 cm long, glabrous, ebracteolate. Hypanthium obconic, 10‒14 × 4‒7 mm, glabrous. Calyx lobes ovate to lanceolate, 3‒10 × 1.0‒ 4.5 mm, patent to ascending, glabrous, basally spaced by sinuses to 2 mm wide, margin entire, apex rounded. Corolla green suffused with red, or red, purple or fuchsia, glabrous; tube 1.4‒1.5 cm long, 2‒3 mm diameter at its mid-level, inflated proximally and distally; lobes narrowly oblong to narrowly ovate, falcate, apex acuminate, dorsal lobes 14‒17 × 3‒4 mm, lateral lobes 7‒10 × 3‒5 mm, ventral lobe 6.5‒7.5 × 5.5‒6.5 mm. Synandrium 3.4‒4.1 cm long, exserted up to 2.4 cm; filament tube 3.0‒ 3.5 cm long, slightly puberulous; anther tube 4‒6 mm, glabrous, ventral anthers barbate. Berries cylindric, 12‒18 × 8‒10 mm, not inflated but spongy, green when young, later white to pink to often deep blue when ripe.

Phenology: —The species sets flowers and fruits throughout most of the year.

Distribution, ecology and conservation status: — Burmeistera cyclostigmata occurs in Costa Rica, Panamá, Colombia and Ecuador. In Colombia, it occurs in wet forests of the Pacific region and the Western Cordillera, at elevations between the sea level and 2700 m, in the departments of Antioquia, Caldas, Cauca, Chocó, Nariño, Putumayo, Risaralda and Valle del Cauca, with a few isolated collections at the eastern Andean slopes of the department of Putumayo. Following the IUCN (2022) Guidelines, it is highly likely that this species is not threatened.

Notes: — Burmeistera cyclostigmata is similar to B. cylindrocarpa and B. marginata , from which it differs by the leaf blade glabrous beneath, with 9 to 12 secondary veins per side, the corolla with tube 1.4–1.5 cm long and dorsal lobes 14–17 mm long, the synandrium exserted up to 2.4 cm, and the mature berries often pink to deep blue (versus the leaf blade puberulous or tomentose beneath, with 12 to 20 secondary veins per side, the corolla with tube 0.8–1.2 cm long and dorsal lobes 10–14 mm long, the synandrium exserted up to 1.5 cm, and the mature berries often white to green-yellowish in B. cylindrocarpa and B. marginata ).

There are at least four sheets of the original material of Burmeistera cyclostigmata (J. Cooper 5845), neither of which was designated as the holotype. The sheet chosen here as the lectotype (GH [ GH00031994 ]) is the most complete.

Similarly , Burmeistera cyclostigmata var. suerrensis was described based on the specimen Donnell Smith 6623, which has four sheets at G, GH, M and US. The sheet chosen here as the lectotype (G[ G00236834 ]) is the most complete.

Finally, Burmeistera cerasifera was described based on the specimen Lehmann 2934, which has two sheets at BM and G. The sheet here described as the lectotype (G[ G00236658 ]) is the most complete.
