BRADYSIA ARCANA MENZEL & MOHRIG, 1998 View in CoL

Literature: Donisthorpe (1927): 138 [in part as Sciara sp. ? (3)]; Menzel & Mohrig (1998): 355; Menzel & Mohrig (2000): 151.

New to British list.

Material examined: Oxshott , Surrey, 1 male, [26]. iv.1901, Donisthorpe leg. ( BMNH) .

Ecological notes: found in a site comprising heathland and pine woodland; collected with the ant Lasius fuliginosus . iv.

Taxonomic note: In contradiction to the original description by Menzel & Mohrig (1998) and the version in Menzel & Mohrig (2000) the apical spine group on the holotype has 10 spines [not 6–7]; they partially overlap because of their close grouping. Also the species has a hook-like tooth above the apical spine group that is set back on the dorsal side of the gonostyle. In the holotype the small tooth is only obvious on the left gonostyle. Bradysia fenestralis (Zetterstedt) does not have this tooth structure.
