Taphozous saccolaimus Temminck, 1838 View in CoL
Temminck, C.J. (1838) Over de Geslachten Taphozous , Emballonura , Urocryptus en Diclidurus . Tijdschrift voor Natuurlijke Geschiedenis en Physiologie, 5: 14 [1–34].
Valid name: Saccolaimus saccolaimus (Temminck, 1838)
Paralectotypes (marked with type *): ZMB 2554 View Materials (two specimens), bodies in alcohol, skulls not extracted, male and female, adults; Java, Indonesia; ex RMNH. ZMB 435 View Materials , skin and skull, female; Java, Indonesia; donated by Temminck .
Comment: Originally no holotype was designated. Jentink (1888: 198) listed six “types” [syntypes] and Jentink (1887: 287) four type skulls from Java (leg. H. Kuhl & van Hasselt) for RMNH. Tate (1940: 8) listed specimens “a – e” (5 skins, skulls still inside), and “f – h” (3 skulls only) in RMNH, and stated that two species are represented: “a, b, c, and h” are larger, expl. “d and e” are another, smaller sp.; the name saccolaimus should be restricted to larger species. Tate (1941a: 1) fixed a lectotype from the “cotypical” series (comprising Taphozous longimanus kampenii Jentink 1907 ) at RMNH. Thus, both specimens ZMB 2554 as well as the specimen ZMB 435, became paralectotypes.
