De Vivo’s Disk-winged Bat

Thyroptera devivor 1s the sister taxon to T. lavali . Monotypic.

Distribution. Scattered records in Colombian Llanos, SW Guyana, and NE Brazil suggest a much widerdistribution. View Figure

Descriptive notes. Head-body 38-4-46 mm, tail 24-6-29 mm, ear (from the notch) 7-9-11 mm, forearm 35-7-38 mm; weight 5 g (paratype). Greatest length of skull 14-7-15-1 mm, condylo-incisive length 13-7-13-9 mm, rostral length averages 5-8 mm, zygomatic breadth 7-4-7-7 mm, and maxillary tooth row length 5-7-6-1 mm. Mesopterygoid fossa is V-shaped. Overall, dorsal pelage of De Vivo’s Disk-winged Bat is cinnamon-brown, with fairly unicolored hairs or, if bicolored, one-third of base is blackish. Ventral fur is bicolored, dark brown to black; basal one-halfhas frosted white to grayish tips. Oblong and deep adhesive disk occurs on thumb. I, has accessory cuspulids. Calcar usually does not have lappets but can have one poorly developed lappet.

Habitat. Moist galleryforests in savanna landscapes, unlike habitats ofthe otherfour species ofthyropterids. In Guyana and Brazil, De Vivo’s Disk-winged Bats are foundin rupumuni and cerrado savannas, respectively, and one individual was mist-netted in understory ofa palm ( Mauritia flexuosa, Arecaceae ) swamp in Colombia.

Food and Feeding. De Vivo’s Disk-winged Bat is insectivorous.

Breeding. No information.

Activity patterns. The only known roost site of De Vivo’s Disk-winged Bat was described as “under an eaté palm leaf.”

Movements, Home range and Social organization. No information.

Status and Conservation. Classified as Data Deficient on The [UCNRedList. De Vivo's Disk-winged Bat is known only from a few specimens at five localities. Its habitat in the southern part ofits rangeis being transformedrapidly and the impact is not yet known. Urgent studies are required on distribution, abundance, ecology, and threats.
