The illustrations of S. ianthina and P. brasilica are extremely similar and the types come from neighboring localities. No explanation as to how these species can be distinguished from each other was provided by the authors, and therefore the names are here considered synonyms. The exact phylogenetic position of Pabstiella brasilica and its close relative Anathallis spiculifera (Lind.) Luer is still not resolved (to our knowledge). Perhaps both are related to Madisonia kerrii (Braga) Luer , a monospecific genus that is yet unplaced. Despite all these uncertainties, they certainly do not belong in Specklinia .
