BM s.n. H.B 112/ Perichaena / variabilis longipes GL/ var. pedata / Stipitate form./ Chestnut Hill, Philada / Aug 1903 / N.XXIp.121/ BM001089124.

NOTES: When Lister & G. Lister (1904: 139) described the variety they commented “In April, 1902, we gathered seven examples of the stipitate form on dead leaves in an ivy-covered hollow on the Lyme Regis Underdcliff” and “We received from Mr. Bilgram a specimen collected by him at Chestnut Hill, Philadelphia, in August, 1903, which resembles the Lyme Regis gathering in all respects, except that the stalks vary from 0.3 to 0.1 mm in length, and the sporangia are often reniform”. In BM we only located one box (H.B. 112) from Philadelphia that we designate as the lectotype. Its label references notebook XXI: 121–122 with comments and illustrations of this collection, and part of the illustration is reproduced in the publication of the variety. We did not locate the Lyme Regis material, although there are comments on it apparently in notebook XX: 68 that was missing during our visit. No slides located. This var. pedata , is distinctive and was raised to species rank by Jahn (1919), although he attributes authorship to “Lister?”, but Lister (1925) in the third edition of the monograph does not include either the variety or the species.
