Elfin Forest Hocicudo
French: Hocicudo a front noir / German: Elfenwald-Grabmaus / Spanish: Raton hocicudo de bosque delicado
Taxonomy. Oxymycterus paramensis nigrifrons Osgood, 1944 , “Limbani, Puno, Inambari drainage, Peru. Altitude about 9000 feet [= 2743 m].” This species is monotypic.
Distribution. SE Peru (S Cordillera Carabaya ) and WC Bolivia ( Cordillera Real ). View Figure
Descriptive notes. Head-body 117-133 mm, tail 79-96 mm, hindfoot 23— 27 mm. No specific data are available for body weight. See general characters of the genus under the Amazonian Hocicudo ( O. amazonicus ) account. The Elfin Forest Hocicudo is a medium-sized species of Oxymycterus . Dorsum is light brownish; venter is yellowish wash but with dark gray bases of hairs apparent. Hairs of forefeet and hindfeet are almost totally unpigmented;tail is dark above and nonpigmented or light brownish below.
Habitat. Cold temperate forests, second growth brush, and fields in valleys edged by abruptcliffs with Puna vegetation at elevations of 2000-3350 m.
