Distributed from Mexico to the Antilles, northeast and southeast Brazil. Goldberg (1967) reported this species from Brazil, based on five collections located in foreign herbaria, four of them collected in Ceará, and one from Rio de Janeiro. None of the five cited specimens were able to be analyzed at this time. Despite fieldwork efforts, M. nodiflora was not found even in Cabo Frio, Rio de Janeiro, the locality indicated by Goldberg (1967).
