Leptogium fusisporum (Tuck.) C.W. Dodge (1933: 418) . ( Figure 2B View FIGURE 2 )
≡ Leptogium chloromelum var. stellans f. fusisporum Tuck. (1882: 164) .
Holotype: — USA. Florida: Caloosa River, Austin 1878 ( FH).
Description: Sierk (1964).
Notes: Leptogium fusisporum is characterized by a thallus composed of lacinuloid branches, with both upper and lower surfaces wrinkled, and the most pronounced wrinkles along the lobes length. The central part of the thallus consists of thickened lobules, and the ascospores are 25–40 × 6–7 μ m, transversely 3–5-septate ( Sierk 1964).
In the examined material, the thallus texture is more similar to that of L. phyllocarpum than L. austroamericanum and could be characterized as ridged; the thickened lobules have a cerebroid appearance; and the ascospores are transversely 3–5-septate, 30–50 × 5.0–7.5 μ m. Nevertheless, the examined material is still closer to L. fusisporum than any other species with transversely septate ascospores.
Usually this species is found sterile and can be confused with L. floridanum Sierk , which has fusiform and submuriform ascospores, 22–35 × 9–14 μ m ( Sierk 1964). However, here the correct name was used, L. fusisporum , after fertile specimens were studied.
Leptogium brebissonii and L. fusisporum are species with transversely septate ascospores reported to Mato Grosso do Sul, but L. brebissonii is an isidiate species and L. fusisporum is a non-isidiate.
Distribution in Brazil: First record to Mato Grosso do Sul. It is also known to São Paulo ( Cunha 2007).
