Leaf marginal cells with the tangential (free) walls thickened, forming a ± distinct glistening border, (often with lens-like wall thickening extending into the cell lumen). Areolation rather lax, the median leaf cells 30–42 μm wide × 38–55 μm long, the trigones large and slightly bulging. Surface with hemispherical papillae clustered over the cell lumen, the individual papillae elliptical as seen from above, with a nipple-like projection 2–4 μm wide; also with welt-like striae extending over the walls between adjoining cells.

Type: — Holotype: NEW ZEALAND. South Island, Canterbury Prov., Arthur’s Pass Natl. Park, Bealey River, off Bealey Valley Track , 830–850 m, Engel 18465 (holotype F, isotype CHR).

The variety is not found outside New Zealand.
