Lindner (1935) described the genus Hypoceromys View in CoL and pointed out the similarity to Psapharomys Grünberg. But View in CoL because of the more dorsally inserted arista-like last antennal flagellomere, he proposed this new genus. He was not aware of the strong sexual dimorphism in this genus (and in the related Psapharomys View in CoL , see below). When he described Meristomeringella jamesi View in CoL ( Fig. 5 View FIGURES 1 – 6 ), he compared the new genus with Meristomerinx Enderlein View in CoL , which is strange because the two genera are not really similar, especially vein R2+3 arising distinctly distal to crossvein r–m in Meristomerinx View in CoL and proximal to crossvein r–m in Meristomeringella View in CoL . Only a year later he described Hypoxycera simplex View in CoL and mentioned that the last antennal flagellomere was inserted slightly dorsad on the spindle shaped flagellum, which is also the case in Meristomeringella jamesi View in CoL . We examined the type specimens of both species and concluded that they are conspecific, and that they belong in the genus Hypoceromys View in CoL .

The holotype of Pachygaster nigripes ( Fig. 6 View FIGURES 1 – 6 ) has the antennae missing (as mentioned in the original description), but all other characters, such as the wing venation, shape of the head and body shape clearly place this species in the genus Hypoceromys .
