Descriptive notes. Head—body 245 mm, tail 340 mm. No specific data are available for body weight. Vieira’s Tree-rat is small-sized, with dark brown back and nearly indistinct but dull brown sides, covered with flat spines on mid-back but not on rump, and overall with stiff bristled fur. Head has dark maroon medial stripe from crown to rostrum—a distinct feature compared with the geographically adjacent White-faced Tree-rat ( E. chrysurus ). Under parts of Vieira’s Tree-rat are light brown. Tail is 139% of head-body length and densely haired from base to tip. As in congeners, tail is longitudinally bicolored, with basal one-third glossy black and distal two-thirds white. Ears are short and covered by hairs of head. Hindfeet are broad, with powerful claws on each toe.
Habitat. Mature lowland rainforest (based on only two known localities).
Food and Feeding. There is no specific information available for this species, but Vieira’s Tree-rat is likely to be folivorous—frugivorous and might also eat some arthropods.
Breeding. There is no information available for this species.
Activity patterns. There is no specific information available for this species, but Vieira’s Tree-rat is probably nocturnal.
Movements, Home range and Social organization. There is no information available for this species.
Status and Conservation. Classified as Data Deficient on The IUCN Red List. Additional ecological studies of Vieira’s Tree-rat, a rare Amazonian endemic, are needed.
