Doris flammulata Quoy and Gaimard, 1832 (Fig. 26E)

Description notes Only external morphology: size 100 mm; mantle soft, thin, edge lacinate; generally red-brown; “gnawed” background with small yellow dots around the main dorsal region and a series of yellowish flames with red dots; mantle margin cherry red, edges white; gill branches vary from seven to eight; underside colored as notum, but more yellow.

Own conclusion/opinion on its taxonomic status Our study reveals that this morphotype is one of the many variations of H. lacer . This species could not be H. giganteus sp. nov. because individuals of similar sizes of H. giganteus sp. nov. bear whitish dorsum with yellow edge and pinkish blotches (not dots).
