( Fig. 6 View FIGURE 6 A–D)

Larva. Remarks. McLellan (1971) associated the life stages by extracting the wings and male genitalia from mature larvae. The original description by McLellan (1971) suggested the larvae to be identical to D. serricauda apart from size and lack of distinct rings of dark hairs on cerci. Hynes (1978) mentions McLellan’s (1971) inability to distinguish it from D. serricauda and further described the larvae of D. brevipennis .

Length: 4–5 mm.

Colour: Light brown, dark patches on nota. Early instars pale, mottled pattern on head may be present, dark spots on abdominal segments.

Body: Slender, surfaces dorsally and ventrally covered with long robust setae.

Head: Two welt-like areas medial to eyes; two dark spots on frons. Antennae scape, pedicle and other segments with long robust setae present. Antennae as long as body; segments robust, length greater than width after approximately segment 18.

Thorax: Pronotum wider than head (less obvious in mature specimens); all corners broadly rounded, slightly produced in appearance; margins flanged. Pronotum in mature specimens side margins have a pinched medial appearance; juvenile specimens’ side margins straight, anterior and posterior margins with pinched appearance. Meso- and meta-nota without raised bosses; hind margins straight.

Legs: Coxa well developed. Coxa and trochanter with long robust setae present. All surfaces of legs with long robust setae present. Outer margin of femora with peg-like setae present. Inner margin with rows of robust setae present, denser in distal area. Tibiae with dark band in proximal area.

Abdomen: Hind margins of tergites with fringe of long robust setae; hind margin tergite X with long robust and broad paddle like setae (length 0.1 mm). Surface of tergite X with dense cover of long robust setae. Gills light orange. Cerci thin and as long as abdomen, segment length greater than width by 4th segment from tip of paraproct. Paraprocts long (length greater than width at base) and triangular, long robust setae present.
