Ciphomia pubiventris Rondani, 1863 View in CoL

ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1863: 86.

TYPE LOCALITY: “ Cap. B. Spei [Cape of Good Hope ( South Africa)]” .

TYPE MATERIAL: 1 ♀, syntype ( MZUN: Box Coll. entomol. extra-europea, Fam. Stratiomidei—Gen. Philocera a Psellidotus ): Ciphomia pubiventris Rnd., C. B. Sp. [= Caput Bonae Spei (Cape of Good Hope)] / M. Zool. N° 10961.

CURRENT STATUS: valid species, as Cyphomyia pubiventris View in CoL ( James 1980: 260, Woodley 2001: 162).

REMARKS: Rondani (1863: 86) described Ciphomia pubiventris from just the female sex, without specifying either the number or the length of the specimens, from material received from M. Spinola. Costa (1866: 39) listed a single MZUN specimen numbered “924”. We also found one syntype in this study. Rondani described this nominal species under the generic name Ciphomia , in his index (p. 94) wrote Cyphomya . “ Ciphomia ” and “ Cyphomya ” are both “incorrect subsequent spellings of Cyphomyia Wiedemann, 1819 ” ( O’Hara et al. 2011: 60).
