Centris difformis Smith, 1854 View in CoL . 374.

Type data: This species was described based on an unknown number of females collected in the Tapajós River, northern Brazil. A female belonging to the type series is housed at NHMUK and is here designated the lectotype. The specimen has the following data label: Type H. T. [red-rimmed circular label, printed]\ B.M. TYPE HYM. [printed] 17B.912 [handwritten]\ Centris diffomis Type Sm [handwritten]\ difformis Sm. Type [handwritten].

Type locality: Brazil: Pará state: Rio Tapajós .

Comments: Friese (1902) proposed C. cornuta Cresson, 1865 as junior synonym of C. difformis . There is no evidence that Friese actually studied the type specimens of both species. Indeed, there is reason to suppose that he did not, because the original descriptions of both species do not agree in several aspects related to stunning features of heads structure. This species was correctly interpreted by Snelling (1984) and Moure et al. (2007).
