Notes:— Capparis sabiifolia was described for the first time from Khasia Hills, North East India. The collection number and herbarium details were not specified in the protologue. Later, Jacobs (1965) made a new combination and treated Capparis sabiifolia as C. acutifolia subsp. sabiifolia (Hook.f. & Thomson) Jacobs (1965: 432). In this treatment, Jacobs (1965) cited Hook.f. & Thomson’s original collections as holotype (Hook.f. & Thomson, 1692, K, Holo).
While searching for the type materials of Capparis sabiifolia , we could locate seven specimens, three at K (K000247295, K000247296, K000247297) and one each at BM (BM000629301), G (G00237952), GH (GH00042273), and M (M0241020), all collected by Hooker J.D. & Thomson. One of these (K000247295, designated here as a lectotype) have Hooker J.D. & Thomson’s annotation as “ 1692, 13 July 1850, 19 Capparis sabiaefolia Hf &J., Hab. Khasia, altitude 4-6000 feet and coll. J.D.H.& J.J.”, and Jacobs (1961) and Chayamarit’s (1986) annotations as “ Capparis acutifolia subsp. sabiaefolia (H.f & TH.) Jacobs, 1961” and “ Capparis sabiifolia Hook. f. & Thoms., Paratype, 11/11/1986 ”, respectively. Similar annotations are attached with other two specimens (K000247296 & K000247297) where Chayamarit designated them as Paratype and Lectotype respectively. She (1986) also annotated one specimen (K000247297) as “ Lectotype ” which have a different date of collection (July 28, 1850). However, they were never effectively published (Art. 7.10 & 7.11 of ICN). Hence, we have designated here a lectotype following Art. 7.11, 9.3 and 9.10 of ICN ( Turland et al. 2018).
Another specimen (BM000629301) housed at BM have annotations by Hook.f. & Thomson “ Herb. Ind. Or. Hook. fil & Thomson., 19 Capparis, Hab. Khasia, Regio. Temp. , alt. 4-6000 feet, Coll. J.D.H.& J.J ”, and by Jacobs (1961) “ Capparidaceae , revised by M. Jacobs, 1961, Capparis acutifolia subsp. sabiaefolia (H.f & TH.) Jacobs, Type coll. C. sabiaefolia Hook. f. & TH.”. Similarly, specimens at G (G00237952), GH (GH00042273), and M (M0241020) have the same annotation as BM specimen. As the specimens have same annotations as K but the collection date and collection number is not specified, these are considered here as Syntypes.
