Diagnosis: Pronotum with posterior lateral margins divergent; surface with very dense and deep punctation. Mesometaventral projection very wide and rounded. Protibia with apical denticle elongate. Parameres apically forceps-like, apex rounded.

Description: Holotype (male, IEXA): length 11.25 mm; width 5.08 mm. Colour: head, pronotum, scutellar shield, venter and legs dark metallic green; elytra shiny black ( Figs 8C View Figure 8 , 11 View Figure 11 ). Head ( Fig. 11C, D View Figure 11 ): frons densely punctate; punctures wide and deep, rounded. Clypeus with apex slightly curved, reflexed, lateral borders straight, broad-based, elongate; densely areolate-rugose, spaces not rugulose-transverse. Interocular width equals to 6.60 transverse eye diameters. Antennal club subequal to scape, pedicel, and funicle together. Pronotum ( Fig. 11E View Figure 11 ): lateral margins divergent (distal half); surface densely and irregularly punctate (separated by less than one puncture diameter), punctures wide, deep, rounded ( Fig. 11F View Figure 11 ). Elytra: surface with 12 punctate striae not parallel; punctures wide and deep, irregularly contiguous; 7 striae on disc, 5 laterad of humerus; dorsal striae 5 and 8 irregularly impressed, incomplete; stria 10 and 11 mixed; interstriae raised, sutural striae raised on distal half, subbasal sinuation not deep. Pygidium ( Fig. 11G View Figure 11 ): surface finely imbricate, with short and thick setae, some long and very slender on apex; concavity pronounced gradually throughout (lateral view). Venter ( Fig. 11A, B View Figure 11 ): mesometaventral projection very wide, surpassing the mid-mesocoxa, apex rounded and scarcely protruding (lateral view); abdominal ventrites with scarce and very irregular, transverse rows of short, yellowish setae, across entire surface. Legs ( Fig. 11H–L View Figure 11 ): protibia moderately narrow; upper teeth elongated, curved, and pointed; protarsomere 5 slightly shorter to the length of the previous ones combined, internobasal protuberance keel-shaped; protarsomeres 1–4 progressively shorter, the 4th slightly widened; protarsomere 4 with internomesial lobe not increased; protarsomere 1 longer than 2. Lower ramus of inner claw 2.4 times the width of upper one. Mesotibia widest at middle, not expanded at apex; external margin with separate, few short spines at base; discontinuous, oblique carina in basal third (composed of 4–5 spines), and continuous oblique carina in subapical two-thirds (composed of 5–6 spines, the 2nd external elongated); apex with 6–7 relatively long spines; apical spurs acute; internal spine produced to the half of mesotarsomere 2, external spur subequal to mesotarsomere 1. Metatibia widest at middle, very few expanded at apex, external margin with incomplete oblique carina at basal third (composed of 6 short spines), and almost complete oblique carina in subapical two-thirds (composed of 6–7 spines); apex with 10 short spines; internal spine produced near to the half of metatarsomere 2, external spur shorter than mesotarsomere 1. Metatarsomere 5 shorter than the length of the previous ones combined; internal mesoapical patch of setae present in metatarsomere 4; internal spines of metatarsomere 1 and external ones of metatarsomere 4 slender and long. Parameres ( Fig. 9C View Figure 9 ): as long as wide; external margins sinuated, constricted at base and subapically widened and rounded, distally forceps-like curved, apex rounded.

Sexual dimorphism: Females similar to male with the following exceptions: body bigger, average length 12.53 mm (male average length 10.90 mm); protibia with apical denticle slightly longer and curved; protarsus thin: the 1st twice as long as the 2nd; the second, third and fourth, as long as wide; internal protarsal claw thin, with the upper ramus slightly thinner than the lower (1.5– 1.7 times wider).

Variation: Body size ranging between 10–13 mm. Colour completely navy blue to black or contrastingly colourful, with head and pronotum green or metallic blue; elytra completely black or with the anterior half orange. The specimens vary slightly in the density and depth of punctation of the clypeus, frons and scutellar shield, and slightly in the mesometaventral projection.

Etymology: From the Purepechan word ‘ choperi ’, rough or rugged ( Lathrop 2007), alluding to the dense and rough punctuation of the pronotum.

Distribution: Estado de Mexico, Guerrero, and Michoacan, Mexico ( Luna-León et al. 2017) ( Fig. 15 View Figure 15 ).

Phenology: July (1), August (12), September (29) and October (5).

Natural history: This species inhabits central-western Mexico, in localities with deciduous forest vegetation located between 1250 and 1960 m a.s.l. The feeding habits and life cycle are unknown.

Taxonomic remarks: This is the second largest species of the genus (after Callirhinus veeme ), although, it presents some morphological similarities with the smallest species, C. huiniis , restricted to the Oaxaca coast, such as the thin protibia, with an elongated apical denticle and forceps-like parameres, with the outer edge curved.
