3.12. Myrcia panicularis (O.Berg) N. Silveira (1985: 66) View in CoL . Aulomyrcia panicularis O. Berg (1857: 84) . Type:— BRAZIL. Rio de Janeiro, ad S. Anna, unknown date, Beyrich s.n. (syntype B [destroyed]).
All Beyrich’s collections of Myrtaceae found in the European herbaria were analysed. The type at B was probably destroyed and perhaps no duplicates were distributed to other herbaria. The protologue cites similarity with Aulomyrcia camareana ( De Candolle 1828: 251) O. Berg (1855 –1856: 50), a current synonym of Myrcia multiflora ( Lamarck 1789: 202) De Candolle (1828: 244) , treated in Myrcia sect. Aulomyrcia . Features such as leaf morphology, obovoid floral bud, pentamerous flower, hypanthium prolonged beyond the ovary and two locular ovary agree with M. multiflora , making it possible that M. panicularis could be one of the many synonyms of M. multiflora . However, it is not possible to confirm the identity of M. panicularis without the type collection or any other collection analysed by the author of the species.
