Material examined. Holotype NHM UK 2013.1081, Stn 237: Pacific, Northwest (off Tokyo, Japan); 3429 m.
Supplementary description. Newman & Ross (1971) as Arcoscalpellum vitreum .
Distribution. Pacific, Western; Atlantic, Northeast; Indian Ocean. Known depth range 463 to 6096 m.
Remarks. This species belongs to a group of morphologically similar scalpellids that also includes Amigdoscalpellum elegans ( Hoek, 1907) and A. costellatum ( Withers, 1935) . These species have been reported from widely dispersed locations around the world and have acquired numerous synonyms. We were not able to study the appendages of the single “Challenger” specimen to compare with other descriptions, but the application of molecular genetic analysis should clarify the relationships between these species.
