Akodon (Akodon) mystax Hershkovitz 1998 View in CoL
Akodon (Akodon) mystax Hershkovitz 1998 View in CoL , Bonn. Zool. Beitr., Vol. 47: 220.
Type Locality: Brazil, Minas Gerais, Pico da Bandeira, W slope Mt Caparaó, Arrozal, 2300 m.
Vernacular Names: Caparao Akodont.
Distribution: Known only from highland localities, 2000-2700 m, in Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro, SE Brazil.
Discussion: Subgenus Akodon , A. boliviensis species group ( Hershkovitz, 1990 c) or A. cursor species group ( Geise et al., 2001). Described as related to A. sanctipaulensis , A. lindberghi , and A. azarae ( Hershkovitz, 1998) , but gene-sequence data suggest closer affinity to A. cursor and A. montensis ( Geise et al., 2001) . Status with respect to A. paranaensis and to A. reigi , which are morphologically very similar and have the same diploid number ( Christoff et al., 2000; González et al., 1998), should be reviewed and their morphological definition and distributional limits as three separate species verified.
