10. Agarista uleana ( Sleumer 1935: 481) Judd (1894: 332) View in CoL .
Type:— BRAZIL. Rio de Janeiro: Pico da Tijuca, 1000 m., fl. and fr., November 1897, E. Ule 4576 (lectotype HBG515547 , designated by Judd 1984: 332; isolectotype R92776 !; the former holotype B †, designated by Sleumer 1935: 481) .
= Leucothoë ambigua Meisner (1863: 156) var. parvifolia Meisner (1863: 156) View in CoL . Type:— BRAZIL. Rio de Janeiro: [Guanabara] Rio de Janeiro, L. Riedel s.n. (holotype, lectotype, NY00010134!, here designated; the former lectotype (Herb. Sonder) BM, lost, designated by Sleumer 1935: 474). Epitype:— BRAZIL. Rio de Janeiro: Rio de Janeiro, Tijuca, Morro Queimado, A.F.M. Glaziou 6620 (P04507702, image!; isoepitypes F0139673!, NY390868!, NY390867!).
Note:—The type of Leucothoë ambigua var. parvifolia, Riedel s.n., was originally deposited in the Herbarium Sonder (“Riedel in herb. Sonder”). This variety was characterized mainly by the oblong lanceolate leaves with sharp recurved edges, thin petiole and minutely canose-tomentose peduncles. The holotype of L. ambigua var. parvifolia was not seen by Judd (1984, 1995) and there is no indication if it is extant. The one syntype, NY00010134, consists of fragments. No lectotypification has been proposed until now.
We designated the specimen NY00010134 as lectotype (Art. 9.12, ICN ( Turland et al. 2018) because it is the only known remaining material from the type ( Fig. 4 View FIGURE 4 ). This specimen comprises only fragments of leaves and does not comprise enough material to fully represent the concept of the name Leucothoë ambigua var. parvifolia ( Figure 4A View FIGURE 4 ). Therefore, we are designating Glaziou 6620 (P04507702; Fig. 4B View FIGURE 4 ) as epitype following the Art. 9.9 of the ICN ( Turland et al. 2018). We chose that specimen because it was already mentioned by Sleumer (1959) when he synonymized L. ambigua var. parvifolia under Agarista uleana . This specimen presents all the features used for the description of the species indicated in the protologue, and additionally contains flowers. This material is available digitally in the digital herbarium database from P (MNHN, 2022). Moreover, isoepitypes are available digitally on speciesLink (SPECIESLINK, 2022) and also on the digital herbarium databases from F (Field Museum Botanical Collections 2022) and NY ( NYBG 2022).
