Diagnosis. A mostly Central American and Caribbean group, section Conostegiais distinguished by the following combination of characters: calyx calyptrate with the calyptra falling as a unit, lacking calyx teeth altogether, and with conspicuous sclereids internally. Flowers generally pleiostemonous, staminal filaments not evidently geniculate and transitioning smoothly to the anther thecae, style mostly the same length or shorter than the stamens, with a stele within, mucilage inside the ovary, seeds ovoid and smooth.
