Genus Oreaster Müller & Troschel, 1842 View in CoL View at ENA

Type species. Oreaster reticulatus ( Linnaeus, 1758) View in CoL (type by original designation by Döderlein, 1916).

Remarks. The genus Oreaster is composed of only two species: O. clavatus Müller & Troschel, 1842 (East Atlantic) and O. reticulatus (West Atlantic). The molecular data published by Janies et al. (2019) indicated that there was a new species of Oreaster from the Gulf of Mexico. However, Collins et al. (2020) concluded that the specimens analyzed by Janies et al. (2019) are more closely related to Valvaster striatus ( Lamarck, 1816) , a species considered endemic to the Indo-Pacific.
