Diagnosis

Head with anteroventral margin oblique, as long as first three pereonites combined. Antenna 1 slightly longer than peduncle of antenna 2. Coxa 1 without posterodistal notch. Pereopod 7, basis lobe reaching middle of merus; which is not drawn out posterodistally, carpus with three robust setae in posterodistal angle; propodus stout, scarcely longer than carpus, with four robust setae in anterodistal angle; dactylus tumid and shorter than propodus. Epimeron 3 straight and posteroventral angle not drawn out into a spine. Uropod 1 rami slender, as long as peduncle with three medial robust setae on inner margins. Uropod 2 rami slightly shorter than peduncle and with medial robust setae. Uropod 3 exceeding apex of uropod 1 and 2, peduncle short, inner ramus longer and stouter than outer with four or five robust setae along outer margin. Telson cleft about 0.8 times length, apices notched bearing a robust seta, dorsal surface with one or two robust setae.

Remarks

Ampelisca burkei View in CoL was recently recorded from the Brazilian southwestern Atlantic Ocean ( Valerio-Berardo and Wakabara 2006). Previously, it was known only from the Florida coast ( Barnard and Thomas 1989; Thomas 1993) and the Caribbean Sea ( Diaz and Martin 2001). Since then, A. burkei View in CoL has been collected from many other places along the Brazilian coast usually associated with bioclastic sand and sponges. Valério-Berardo and Wakabara (2006) found four robust setae on the inner ramus of uropod 3, but in the material herein examined we observed five robust setae, as seen in the Florida specimens.
