TYPE LOCALITY: South Africa, Cape Prov., "Inhab. Cape of Good Hope" .

DISTRIBUTION: Southern Hemisphere: cold-temperate continental waters.

STATUS: CITES - Appendix II.

SYNONYMS: breviceps , fitzroyi , Tursio ? panope , similis, supercilliosus.

COMMENTS: Included in cruciger by Hershkovitz (1966a:65), but considered a distinct species by Rice (1977), Brownell (1974), and Mitchell (1975). Previously reported from Kerguelen Isis, reidentified as young specimen of Cephalorhynchus commersonii (Robineau, 1989) .
