TYPE LOCALITY: "South Seas" .

DISTRIBUTION: Worldwide: tropical and warm-temperate waters; cold-temperate waters of the N Pacific, where it appears to stray as far north as the Gulf of Alaska (Pike and MacAskie, 1969).

STATUS: CITES - Appendix II.

SYNONYMS: brachypterus, scammonii , sieboldii .
