Subfamily Benincandoninae subfam. nov. Hotèkpo & Martens urn:lsid:zoobank.org:act:0D13483E-A799-40BC-8382-0B62AA61DEE4

Type genus: Benincandona gen. nov. Hotèkpo & Martens

Diagnosis

Cp and valves whitish, opaque, in general laterally flattened; in some species with external linear ornamentation. LV overlapping RV on all sides, but especially dorsally. Both valves without obvious marginal structures, only with ventral remnants of an il. A1 seven-segmented, without fused segments, but with reduced chaetotaxy on some segments. A2 with aesthetasc Y long and slender, sometimes distally bifurcated. MdPalp with seta s2 much shorter than seta s1; one large end claw fused with terminal segment. Mx1-palp with terminal segment quadrate to rectangular. T1 with setae d and d’ subequal to unequal in length; male prehensile palps subequal. T2 without d1, d2 and e setae, setae f and g present. T3 with seta dp absent, seta d1 long, seta d2 short, long or absent. CR with well-developed ramus, one claw Ga and three small setae (Gp, Sa and Sp). CRatt simple and linear, with few short side branches. Hp with three distal lobes.

Differential diagnosis

The new subfamily can be distinguished from the other subfamilies in the Candonidae by a unique set of characters, including the seven-segmented A1 and the CR with a single distal claw. See Discussion for further details and analysis.

Genus Benincandona gen. nov. Hotèkpo & Martens urn:lsid:zoobank.org:act:CB3EE53F-E132-4713-A2A3-D1B7D5E85F55

Type species: Benincandona martini gen. et spec. nov. Hotèkpo & Martens (here designated)

Other species: B. ibikounlei gen. et spec. nov Hotèkpo & Martens, B. sakitii gen. et spec. nov. Hotèkpo & Martens, B. cebios gen. et spec. nov. Hotèkpo & Martens, B. trapezoides gen. et spec. nov. Hotèkpo & Martens.

Etymology: The prefix of the genus name is derived from the country from where the genus is described, Benin in West Africa. The suffix is derived from the genus Candona , thus indicating the taxonomic affinity with this genus.

Diagnosis: As for the subfamily, see discussion.
