The genus diagnosis is based on Ii (1964). Gastrosaccus species are characterized by a posteriorly deeply emarginated carapace. First abdominal somite in females with well developed, large, oval pleural plate. The pleural plates on the anterior five abdominal somites with more or less developed chitinous process at the dorsal posterior end. Antennal scale short, outer margin without setae and terminates in a strong spine. Labrum anteriorly produced into a long median spiniform process and sometimes with several additional spines on each side of the median process. Sixth joint of endopod of the third to eighth thoracic limbs divided into numerous subjoints, normally 5–7 in the anterior pairs and growing in number to 10–13 in the posterior pairs. Pleopods in male usually biramous, but in some species the third pair lacks the endopod. Telson with a cleft distally, margin of cleft armed with small spines, apical spines or sometimes the last pair of lateral spines larger than other lateral spines. Inner uropod with row of spines on the inner margin. Outer uropod with outer margin armed throughout with spines.

To date, 21 species have been described ( Anderson 2008). One species has been recorded from New Zealand waters.
