Japanagallia spinosa View in CoL sp. nov.

( Figs 1–2 View FIGURES 1 – 4 , 5 View FIGURES 5 – 6 , 7–13 View FIGURES 7 – 13 )

Measurements. Male 4.30 mm long, head 1.33 mm wide across eyes, pronotum 1.25 mm wide. Female 4.50– 4.65 mm long, head 1.50–1.53 mm wide across eyes, pronotum 1.37–1.42 mm wide.

Description (holotype). Ground color black. Vertex ( Figs 1, 2 View FIGURES 1 – 4 ) ochraceous with three black maculae: one slender stripe extending to face and a large round one laterally, adjacent to each compound eye. Face ( Fig. 5 View FIGURES 5 – 6 ) light fulvous with several black maculae: one large black arrow-shaped stripe on mesal part of face, one pair of irregular black maculae, each one between ocelli and adjacent eyes. Frontoclypeus black except longitudinal fulvous median portion; anteclypeus, lorae and genae black with pale yellow maxillary plates. Ocelli ( Fig. 5 View FIGURES 5 – 6 ) reddish brown. Pronotum ( Fig. 1 View FIGURES 1 – 4 ) black except narrow bright yellow lateral and posterior margins. Mesonotum black; mesoscutellum ( Fig. 1 View FIGURES 1 – 4 ) with bright yellow macula bifurcating from apex to scutoscutellar suture. Forewings ( Figs 1, 2 View FIGURES 1 – 4 ) dark brown with claval suture and veins pale yellow. Legs fulvous with dark brown maculae.

Male genitalia. Pygofer ( Fig. 7 View FIGURES 7 – 13 ) well developed, in lateral view, with posterior margin rounded, and bearing numerous small spines; inner posterodorsal margin with hooklike processes ( Figs 7, 8 View FIGURES 7 – 13 ) directed ventrally. Style ( Fig. 9 View FIGURES 7 – 13 ) in lateral view short and stout, apex with acute process, slightly directed inward; style shaft with posterior area bearing small scattered setae and well developed projection on inner margin for articulation with connective. Connective weakly pigmented ( Fig. 10 View FIGURES 7 – 13 ), in ventral view small and platelike, broad at base, narrowing toward apex. Aedeagus ( Figs 11, 12 View FIGURES 7 – 13 ) stout, U-shaped in lateral view; atrial area with well developed dorsal apodeme nearly as long as shaft, and three spinelike processes on ventral margin: one basal and two paired ones, on base of shaft, directed ventroanteriorly; aedeagal shaft, in lateral view, almost straight with pair of subacute, lateral processes, directed ventroposteriorly; gonopore apical.

Female. Face with black maculae on outer margin of ocelli. Pronotum black with two fulvous maculae, lateral and posterior margins yellowish white. Forewings dark brown, apex pale brown, inner margin of claval suture fulvous, apices of claval veins yellowish white. Other color pattern features similar to those of holotype.

Female genitalia. Ovipositor slightly projecting beyond pygofer. Seventh sternite ( Fig. 13 View FIGURES 7 – 13 ) wider than long; posterior margin convex with three very slight depressions: one median and the other two between the median one and lateral margin.

Material examined. Holotype: male, China, Yunnan, Prov.: Gaoligongshan (27°27΄N, 98°29΄E), 2000m, 28 May 2009, Yang Zaihua; paratypes: 4 females, same data as holotype.

Host plant. Unidentified ferns.

Remarks. This species is somewhat similar to Japanagallia pteridis (Matsumura) in coloration, but in J. pteridis (Matsumura) the male pygofer has a sharp projection on each side, and the aedeagus has two accessory processes at midlength.

Etymology. The species epithet, spinosa , refers to the paired spine-like processes of the aedeagus.
