Leuronota solani ( Rübsaamen, 1908) View in CoL , comb. nov.

Distribution. Brazil: RJ ( Rübsaamen 1908, as Bactericera solani ).

Host plant. Solanum sp. ( Solanaceae ).

Comments. Bactericera solani was described by Rübsaamen (1908) from leaf roll galls on an unidentified Solanum species collected in RJ: Serra dos Orgãos. In addition to the description of the gall, he mentioned different larval instars and a single adult specimen with one developed forewing which was about to emerge from the larval skin. Based on the forewing venation Rübsaamen (1908) assigned the species to the triozids suggesting it may represent a new genus. In the larvae he observed a thickened base of the antennal flagellum and concluded that the species is related to Bactericera . With this evidence he described the species provisionally in Bactericera . Up to date the species has not been found again and no additional information was published. Apart from being listed in catalogues B. solani was cited by Hodkinson & White (1981) and Burckhardt & Lauterer (1997). The former listed B. solani under Trioza arguing that Crawford's (1925) synonymy of Aconoza, erected by Rübsaamen (1908) as subgenus of Batericera for B. ulei , with Trioza , automatically applies also to B. solani . This view was followed by Burckhardt & Lauterer (1997).

During recent field work in SC we found adults and larvae associated with leaf roll galls on Solanum ramulosum . The galls, adults and larvae fit Rübsaamen's (1908) decription, though the forewing vein Rs seems slightly longer in our specimens. Similar galls were also found in PR on Solanum sp. and Acnistus breviflorus (Solanaceae) . Larvae were present in both samples, adults, however, only in the former. Again the adult and larval morphology corresponds to Rübsaamen's (1908) decription.

A detailed examination of our material showed that the two samples from Solanum represent two different triozid species, and that the sample from Acnistus represents a third. Rübsaamen's (1908) description is not detailed enough to indicate which if any of our three species is conspecific with B. solani . As apart from the herbarium sheet the type material seems to be lost its identity cannot be elucidated at present. More field work may help to solve the problem. On the other hand Rübsaamen's (1908) indications suggest that our recently collected triozids on Solanaceae are congeneric with B. solani and with Trioza maculata Crawford , the type species of Leuronota . For this reason we transfer here Bactericera solani to Leuronota as Leuronota solani (Rübsaamen) , comb. nov.
