Description: A male sawfly in ventral view with incomplete wings (13mm length of forewing fragment as preserved) and full body (17mm in length of body with male genitalia).

Color brown, particularly on head, legs and mesosoma.

Head (2.4 mm wide, 2.1mm long), protruding forward; clypeus (1.1mm in width) broad and mandible slightly elongated at apex; eyes extraordinarily large, kidney-shaped, nearly occupying half of the head. Antennae (5.8mm length as preserved), about twice as long as width of head, pedicel slightly thicker than scape, terminal part of flagellum only four segments visible, each twice as long as wide, third segment (3.2mm in length) about 3 times thicker than remaining flagellomeres, and 2.5 times longer than combined length of the latter. Abdomen with 7 segments visible; genitalia protruding 1.9mm from abdomen, volsellae digitiform and distinctly divided into three segments.

Hind leg with coxa (1.9mm in length) obviously larger than mid coxa; trochanter small and trapezoid; femur (3.2mm in length) elongate; tibia (3.9mm in length) with a long sharp terminal spur; tarsus (3.1mm in length) shorter than tibia, basitarsus longest and the fourth tarsomere shortest, length (mm) of tarsal segment I to V: 1.3, 0.7, 0.4, 0.3, 0.4.

Forewing with pterostigma about 0.7 times as wide as cell 2R1 and 1.5 times as long as latter; costal area broad and vein Sc closer to R than to C, Sc triple-branched, and the first branch intersecting with C nearly 1/4 of the length; Sc sub-parallel to R and the second branch of Sc (Sc2) short and inclining toward base of wing, meeting R before origin of Rs, Sc then arched upward ending at C about the same distance of the point of Rs meeting M; the first segment of Rs approximately equal to M; R curving after the origin of Rs, and slightly thickened before pterostigma; 1r-rs as long as and sub-parallel to 2r-rs; the segment of Cu before the crossvein 1cu-a nearly straight. Cell 1R1 equal to 1M, cell 1Cu narrow and distinctly broad at base of M, 6 times longer than wide, cell 1A about twice as long as 2A.

Material: Holotype, No. CNU-HYM-NN-2008004, a well-preserved male in ventral view.

Etymology: The species name is from Latin ‘lepid-’ meaning neat or exquisite, describing attributes of this beautiful specimen.

Locality and horizon: Middle Jurassic beds of Daohugou, Jiulongshan Formation, Ningcheng Country, Inner Mongolia, China.
