Type Locality: Australia, Queensland, Darling Downs, Oakey Creek; see Mahoney and Richardson (1988:175).
Vernacular Names: Eastern Chestnut Pseudomys.
Synonyms: Pseudomys ultra Troughton 1939 .
Distribution: Australia; modern range along the eastern coast from Townsville in N Queensland to Sydney area in New South Wales; subfossil specimens from farther south in New South Wales ( Mahoney and Posamentier, 1975) and from S Victoria ( Fox, 1995 a:601; Watts and Aslin, 1981:180; Watts and Tweedie, 1992).
Conservation: IUCN – Lower Risk (lc).
Discussion: Phylogenetically closely related to P. nanus , an estimate based on spermatozoal morphology (Breed, 1983), electrophoretic data ( Baverstock et al., 1977 a, 1981), and morphology of skin, skull, and teeth ( Watts and Aslin, 1981). Fox (1995 a) provided a short recent review.
