Subgenus Chaetonotus sensu stricto Ehrenberg, 1830
Type species: Chaetonotus larus (Müller, 1773) Terra typica : Denmark
Clearly a polyphyletic subgenus in terms of the molecular data (Kånneby et al. 2012, 2013); encompasses 78 nominal freshwater and 4 nominal marine species. Present in benthic, interstitial, peryphytic and rarely also in semiplanktonic habitats.
