Pseudosmittia rectilobus Freeman, 1955: 252 View in CoL ; 1956: 351.

Material examined: SOUTH AFRICA: Stellenbosch , Lightfort, paratype male, x.1917 ( BMNH) . ETHIOPIA: Wendo Genet , at light (near ET. 3), 16.ix.1985, A.D. Harrison ( ZMBN) .

Diagnostic characters: The male imago is distinguished from other members of the group by a triangular, apically rounded pars ventralis; a weak, but still distinct, superior volsella and a well developed inferior volsella without any accessory lobe.

Male imago (n = 2, except when otherwise stated)

Total length 2.39–2.85 mm. Wing length 1.40–1.57 mm. Total length/wing length 1.55–1.82. Wing length/length of profemur 2.86–2.89. Coloration blackish brown.

Head. AR 1.14–1.35. Terminal flagellomere 450–504 µm long. Temporal setae 8–9, consisting of 2 inner verticals, 4 outer verticals and 2–3 postorbitals. Clypeus and cibarial pump as in Fig. 27 B View FIGURE 27 . Clypeus with 8–9 setae. Tentorium ( Fig. 28 A View FIGURE 28 ) 128–167 µm long, 32–37 µm wide. Stipes ( Fig. 28 A View FIGURE 28 ) 137–142 µm long, 50 µm wide. Palpomere lengths (in µm): 30, 50–53, 98–101, 110–119, 146–151. Third palpomere with 1–2 lanceolate sensilla clavata.

Thorax. Median antepronotal lobes well developed, antepronotum with 2 (1) lateral setae. Dorsocentrals 10–14, acrostichals 5, prealars 5–6, supraalar 1. Scutellum with 6–8 setae.

Wing. VR 1.36–1.37. Anal lobe well developed, projecting. Costal extension 0–9 µm long. R 4+5 ending proximal to apex of M 3+4; Cu 1 sinuate. Brachiolum with 1 seta, R with 3 setae, other veins bare.

Legs. Spur of front tibia 48–55 µm long, spurs of middle tibia 32 µm (1) and 25–27 µm long, of hind tibia 53–55 µm and 21–25 µm long. Width at apex of front and middle tibiae each 27–33 µm, of hind tibia 41–50 µm. Comb of 14–17 setae, shortest setae 23–25 µm long, longest setae 39–43 µm long. Lengths and proportions of legs as in Table 16.

Hypopygium ( Fig. 28 D View FIGURE 28 ). Anal point 30–43 µm long, with microtrichia-free apex; tergite IX with 10–12 setae; laterosternite IX with 8–10 setae. Phallapodeme 69–75 µm long; transverse sternapodeme 46–50 µm long, straight or somewhat concave, with oral projections. Virga ( Fig. 28 C View FIGURE 28 ) 6–9 µm long. Pars ventralis bluntly triangular, 38 µm long, 33 µm wide at base. Gonocoxite 165–185 µm long; superior volsella weak, reaching to 0.40–0.42 gonocoxite length; inferior volsella well developed and reaching to 0.62–0.63 gonocoxite length. Gonostylus 70–80 µm long; megaseta 8–9 µm long. HR 2.31–2.36, HV 3.42–3.57.
