Pseudosmittia longicornia View in CoL sp. n.

( Fig. 98 F–K View FIGURE 98 )

Type examin e d: Holotype male, CHINA: Ningxia, Mount Helan , 31.vii.1987, X. Wang ( ZMBN Type No. 442).

Diagnostic characters: The male imago can be separated from other members of the subgroup by having an AR of 1.64, a wing length of 1.59 mm, Cu 1 curved (not sinuate), all leg segments longer than in related species, and superior and median volsella partly fused as in P. pugnata .

Etymology: From the Latin longus, long, cornu, horn, and -ia, ending denoting state of being, referring to the high antennal ratio with the long terminal flagellomere.

Male imago (n = 1)

Total length 2.39 mm. Wing length 1.59 mm. Total length/wing length 1.50. Wing length/length of profemur 3.05. Coloration brownish black.

Head ( Fig. 98 F View FIGURE 98 ). AR 1.64. Terminal flagellomere 531 µm long. Temporal setae 7, consisting of 4 inner verticals and 3 outer verticals. Clypeus with 11 setae. Cibarial pump and stipes as in Fig. 98 I View FIGURE 98 . Tentorium 128 µm long, 32 µm wide. Stipes 128 µm long. Palpomere lengths (in µm): 27, 41, 101, 130, 176. Third palpomere ( Fig. 98 H View FIGURE 98 ) with 4 sensilla clavata.

Thorax. Median antepronotal lobes moderately reduced, antepronotum with 2 lateral setae. Dorsocentrals 10, acrostichals 2, prealars 4, no supraalar seta. Scutellum with 4 setae.

Wing ( Fig. 98 G View FIGURE 98 ). VR 1.50. Anal lobe present, but not projecting. Costal extension 21 µm long. R 4+5 ending distally to apex of M 3+4; Cu 1 slightly curved, not sinuate. Brachiolum and R each with 1 seta, other veins bare.

Legs. Spur of front tibia 41 µm long, spurs of middle tibia 27 µm and 25 µm long, of hind tibia 48 µm and 21µm long. Width at apex of front tibia 30 µm, of middle tibia 27 µm, of hind tibia 41 µm. Comb of 15 setae, 34–48 µm long. Lengths and proportions of legs as in Table 72.

Hypopygium ( Fig. 98 K View FIGURE 98 ). Anal point 9 µm long, no microtrichia, bare; tergite IX with 14 setae; laterosternite IX with 5 setae. Phallapodeme 114 µm long; transverse sternapodeme about 46 µm long, no oral projections. Virga ( Fig. 98 J View FIGURE 98 ) 21µm long. Gonocoxite 167 µm long; superior volsella 30 µm long, median volsella partly fused with superior volsella, 23 µm long; inferior volsella 18 µm long, 25 µm wide. Gonostylus 64 µm long; megaseta 14 µm long. HR 2.61, HV 3.73.

Female, pupa and larva

Unknown.

Remarks

The species is very close to P. forcipata . In addition to the larger size and higher antennal ratio, however, the short and bare anal point indicate that we are justified in regarding it as a distinct species.

Distribution

The species is only known from the type locality in the Ningxia Province of China .
