Distribution. United States (southern California and Nevada), Mexico (Guadalajara).
Remarks. Swammerdamella marginata is a very small scatopsid, ranging from 1.30 to 1.40 mm. The type locality of S. marginata is Las Vegas, New Mexico. Cook (1965a) also referred to specimens of this species from additional sites in southern California (San Bernardino, Davis, Riverside, Los Angeles etc.) and Nevada (Reno). The record for Guadalajara, Mexico, may be questionable, but we did not examine the original specimens identified by Cook (1965a).
This was the most abundant species in our samples, with up to 66.1% of the total number of scatopsid specimens of the project: a total of 367 males and 1,315 females were identified in the sorted samples. The species appeared at 39 of the 47 BioSCAN collecting sites, in a total of 182 collecting events. The most abundant collecting sites for S. marginata were 5, 18, 19, 28, and 30. As happened with Quateiella quatei , there is a clear peak of abundance of S. marginata in early-mid-spring, with a second peak in mid-autumn.
There is no information available on the biology of S. marginata . In North America, there are records of adults of S. pygmaea (Loew) associated to flowers of Staphylea floralis (Staphyleaceae) ( Cook 1956b). Staphylea has species native to eastern North America and to California (USDA 2019), but no connection so far of this plant genus with S. marginata has been formally proposed. In South America, there is a record of emergence of a species of a Swammerdamella over piles of rotting grass (D.S.A., personal observation). The BOLDSystems has one single specimen of Swammerdamella sequenced for Australia, most certainly not S. marginata .
