Remarks. Lameere (1904) considered Apotrophus as a subgenus of Ctenoscelis Audinet-Serville, 1832 , and reported (translated): “ Apotrophus simplicicollis Bates offers all the features of a primitive Ctenoscelis , and if its antennae did not offer coenogenetic features, there would be no reason to even form a subgenus.” As the antennomeres III–X in males are more serrate (cylindrical in males of Ctenoscelis ), we believe that Apotrophus is a different genus. However, we think that it is necessary to conduct a detailed study of the four species included in Ctenoscelis to be sure. Therefore, we are not proposing a new rank for Apotrophus , which already appears in Tavakilian & Chevillotte (2023) as a genus distinct from Ctenoscelis .

Bates (1875) described A. simplicicollis based on a single male from Brazil (Paraná). Later, Thomson (1877) described Paranaecus olivieri also based on a single specimen from Brazil (Paraná). Bates (1878) synonymized P. olivieri with A. simplicicollis .

Currently, it is known from Brazil (Minas Gerais, São Paulo, Paraná, and Rio Grande do Sul), and Paraguay ( Monné 2024c; Tavakilian & Chevillotte 2023). Lameere (1913) recorded A. simplicicollis from Argentina (Misiones), and Gounelle (1909) recorded it species from the Brazilian state of Goiás, both omitted in Monné (2024a). We do not know who recorded the species from the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais: it does not appear in Monné (2006).
