Juglans alba Linnaeus View in CoL , Species Plantarum 2: 997. 1753.
"Habitat in Virginia." RCN: 7224.
Type not designated.
Original material: Kalm, Herb. Linn. No. 1129.2 ( LINN) ; Clayton 466, Herb. Linn. No. 79 ( SBT) ; Clayton 466 (BM); [icon] in Catesby, Nat. Hist. Carolina 1: 38, t. 38. 1730; [icon] in Plukenet, Phytographia: t. 309, f. 2. 1694; Almag. Bot.: 264. 1696 - Voucher: Herb. Sloane 101: 57 ( BM-SL) .
Current name: Carya tomentosa (Poir.) Nutt. View in CoL ( Juglandaceae ).
Note: This name was treated as ambiguous by Rehder (in J. Arnold Arbor. 26: 483. 1945) on the grounds that it was a mixture of Carya ovata (Mill.) K. Koch - Shagbark Hickory (the Plukenet element) and C. tomentosa (Poir.) Nutt. - Mockernut Hickory (Gronovius, Parkinson, Catesby and Kalm elements). Some (e.g. Howard & Staples in J. Arnold Arbor. 64: 527. 1983) appear to have used the name C. alba (L.) K. Koch for C. tomentosa , wrongly believing Crantz to have effectively typified the name on the Catesby element. There may well be a case for rejection. See also comments by Wilbur (in Sida 14: 36. 1990), who supports this solution.
