Type locality and specimens. Gymnas. Johann., Hamburg 1 Exemplar.—Fundort [locality]: Banda .

Dimensions. Länge des Körpers [body length] 42 [mm], der Endbeine 14,9 und 13,7 Mm. [length of ultimate legs 14.9 and 13.7 mm].

Type material. Holotype ( ZMH-A0000660 ). INDONESIA: Maluku Island Archipelago, Banda ( Banda Islands ) [ca. 4°08’S, 39°21’E].

Preservation. 1 jar: Label. Branchiostoma gymnopus n. sp. Hamb. 60 Fdr: Banda. var. […] 199.

Old type catalogue. Weidner (1960), p. 64, No. 5. Holotype.

Taxonomic remarks. This species was synonymized with Rhysida nuda (Newport, 1845) by Kraepelin (1903: 144). Koch (1985) suggested that “some or most” non-Australian specimens of R. nuda should be referred to R. immarginata ( Porat, 1876) but only examined specimens of the latter species from Sudan, Brunei and the Maldives. The issue clearly requires taxonomic review.

Additional remarks. The specimen was originally part of the Gymnasium Johanneum collection in Hamburg (later on ZMH).

Current systematic position. Junior synonym of Rhysida nuda (Newport, 1845) according to Kraepelin (1903:148).
