7. Ostrya virginiana (Mill.) K.Koch View in CoL
Dendrologie 2 (2): 6 ( Koch 1873). – Carpinus virginiana Mill., The Gardeners Dictionary View in CoL ed. 8, no. 6 ( Miller 1768). – Zugilus virginica Raf., Florula Ludoviciana View in CoL : 159 ( Rafinesque 1817) orth. var., nom. illegit. superfl. – O. ostrya var. virginiana (Mill.) C.K.Schneid., Illustriertes Handbuch der Laubholzkunde View in CoL 1: 143 ( Schneider 1904) nom. inval. (tautonym). – Type: [Cult. garden specimen], 1740, Chelsea Physic Garden 938 (lecto-, designated by Reveal (1990): BM001041898!). – Note: in his protologue, Miller only cited a Plukenet (1692) drawing, which does not correspond well to what is today considered as O. virginiana View in CoL . Reveal (1990) found a matching typotype (H.S. 95:143, BM- SL) that turned out to be O. carpinifolia Scop. View in CoL , and three specimens from that era that Miller might have had seen (but without actual evidence) of what is now considered O. virginiana View in CoL . Nevertheless, the proposal to conserve the name with a new type was rejected, and it was decided that one of the specimens should serve as lectotype ( Brummitt 1993).
